The best things in life are not things

Yet another scrapbook layout featuring one of my beautiful nieces. This time the focus is my niece Alita - isn't she just beautiful?

I used up some stash (the papers are all from packs I had laying around) and also tried something new for a scrapbook page - lots & lots of layers. I found lots of inspiration for this page in the following challenges:

My house isn't clean and my kids are going to run out of clean clothes any day now but I have been getting a lot of scrapbooking done... Today's layout is inspired by Scrap Our Stash Challenge and this month's page sketch. I've taken the sketch down to it's basic parts and made this page for my niece's most recent school picture. I used nothing but paper scraps (including the background paper which is a textured off-white) and the burlap ribbon and stickers are scraps too. The washi tapes have been in by stash for quite a while. The twist for the challenge is to use sequins and this was causing me some difficulty as I don't own any. But then I remembered a shirt of mine has a few sequins left on it. I'm not a sparkly person (in terms of clothing) so I had no qualms about removing the sequins and adding them to the heart on the layout. I used my Copic marker to make them black to mirror the black polka dots in the washi tape.

Bath-time for foster kittens

My family fosters 3-4 litters of kittens for our local animal shelter every year. Taking care of these tiny creatures is a lot of fun for my kids (a lot of extra work for me, grumble grumble) and living in a family home makes the kittens a lot easier to adopt.

I have to be honest and admit that, for the most part, I don't like kittens - they are messy, destructive, demanding, and there isn't a lot of personality. Yes, they are cute and adorable and watching their antics is better than TV. But young kittens are all pretty much the same and it isn't until after they leave our foster home that their personalities develop and they become individuals. 

But every once in a while there will be a special kitten or litter that does stand out. Late last year we fostered a litter of orphans who stood out, although not for their personalities. These little monsters were eating on their own - barely - but this involved them swimming in their food. Every meal, every kitten needed to be bathed. This went on for almost 2 weeks. 

This month's major case file challenge at Color - Stories - Inspiration (CSI) used a grumpy cat image for inspiration and I immediately thought of this bunch of kittens for a layout. So here is my entry:

I used scrap papers from a couple of Basic Grey collections and the filmstrip is a digital stamp. The layout and colours come from the CSI inspiration board:

It took 70 years to get this awesome

Today I'm sharing a layout that I just completed celebrating my father's 70th birthday. Although I'm not thrilled with the final page, I keep reminding myself that it's better to have finished pages than perfect pages. LOL.

I used a piece of green cardstock for the background but added watery paint to create a watercolour effect. I also used paint (Tim Holtz Wild honey) to edge all the papers and drag across the background for more texture. The rub-ons and pattered papers are all scraps from Basic Grey Lime Rickey.

My handsome sons

I'm really going to try and scrapbook more this year (and post photos of some of the more successful projects). My first completed layout of the year is this one of my son's current school photos.

I was inspired by the following challenge:

From my stash, I used T(wine, on the chalkboard sign) - W(ave, shape across the page) - I(nk, my journal pen) - N(umbers) - E(yelets, holding the chalkboard sign). I also used up quite a bit of scrap paper from a Sassafras pack that I had. Yay me!

I used a sketch from SketchSavvy but can't for the life of me track it down to link it here. I found it through Google search and printed it off for reference. Part-time Pets

The latest issue of Scrapbooker Magazine includes a layout that I just had to scrap-lift! I've been wanting to scrapbook pictures of various animals that I've fostered over the past year and the grid layout that Scrapbooker Mag presented is just right.

To create the grid, I used a digital photo mask by Carina Gardner. It was so easy to pop the photos & clipart I wanted to use inside the mask and then just print the entire thing out on photo paper. Every section holds a picture of a different dog, cat or litter of kittens that I fostered in 2011. To finish off the edges of the photo grid, I added a strip of orange polka-dot ribbon (very thin, on the right side) as well as brown polka-dot ribbon that I pleated and taped along the bottom.

By the way, have you ever thought about fostering for your local animal shelter? Many animal shelters need foster homes for pregnant dogs/cats, litters of puppies/kittens as well as for animals recovering from injury or illness. Fostering is a wonderful option if you don't want a permanent pet, can't afford the care (the animal shelter usually covers all the costs) or aren't sure if you 're ready for a pet. I have my own "forever" pets but I really enjoy the foster animals too - right now I have a mother cat and her 4 kittens playing at my feet! If you are interested in fostering just contact your local SPCA, Humane Society, or other animal shelter.

Pumpkin patch visit

I love working from home because it gives me the flexibility to take time off to participate in things like my youngest son's field trip to the local pumpkin patch. It was a wonderful day - the sun (unexpectedly) shone and all the kids behaved. I even got a couple of cute pictures of my camera-shy boy.

I started this layout using a sketch from The Scrapaholic Blog. Because I always work in 8-1/2 x 11 pages, I converted their 12x12 sketch into a 2-page layout. I chose papers from the K&Co paper pack mostly although there are a couple of unidentified scraps as well. The border punch is Martha Stewart and the die cuts are mostly My Mind's Eye. My favourite part of the entire layout (other than the smile on my DS) is the tiny little pumpkin paperclip holding the journalling spot - I bought a pack of these clips but haven't used a single one as they are just too darned cute.

Today I'm sharing another (finally) finished layout that was started at last month's all-day scrapbook marathon put on by Jennifer at Scrapbook Adventures. I chose to scrapbook a photo of my dog Larry along with journalling talking about how he joined our family earlier this year. Larry wouldn't be most people's first choice (he's old, arthritic, deaf, and on lifetime meds for thyroid problems) but he is just perfect for our family! He had a tough beginning to his life but we'll make sure that the rest is "happily every after..."

I ended up changing out the background cardstock (thank you to Color Throwdown Challenge for reminding me that reds can really make browns pop!) for something bolder which I think really draws more attention to Larry's lovely face.

Another layout using photos from last summer's vacation in Alberta. The kids had such a great time exploring the hoodoo's (the strange mushroom-shaped rock formations) and I loved scrapbooking the photos. Since the area (Drumheller) is known for its dinosoars, I decided to do a dinosaur theme.

I used a variety of new (to me) embellishments on this layout - canvas letters (coloured light blue using Copic markers, then lightly distressed with ink), corrugated cardboard strips (actually scrap cardboard that I ran through my crimper) and twine (tied in the chipboard button). The dinosaurs were cut using the Accucut machine at my LSS.

I love how well the papers pick up the idea of fun & summer! Cotton candy always makes me think of fairs & carnivals which, of course, are one of the best parts of summer! I thought about adding a title, but in the end figured that the patterned word paper really said it all.

Gamer Growl

Scrapbook marathon - layout #5 of 20

As mentioned in my last post, I attended a workshop called "Use Your Own Stash" which was really more of a scrapbook marathon. Over the course of one day, Jennifer from Scrapbookin' Adventures, took us through the creation of 20 layouts! I'm busily finishing off each layout by adding pictures, titles and journalling (although let's be honest, journalling is pretty minimal in my albums!).


This layout is one of my favourites from the day and I call it "Gamer Growl" because that is exactly what my DS is doing in the top & bottom pictures. Both my kids are huge gamers; here they are playing a role-playing game called Creepy Freaks.

The layout was pretty simple to put together, especially since all the components, except for the top alphas (which are Basic Grey), came in a "Toonie Projects" kit from Photo Express.

Scrapbooking marathon - layout #1

Yesterday I participated in a workshop called "Use Your Own Stash" which was really more of a scrapbook marathon. Over the course of one day, Jennifer from Scrapbookin' Adventures, took us through the creation of 20 layouts! Yes, I really said 20 layouts in a single day!!! Jennifer's workshop promotes doing single page 12 x 12 layouts (which I converted to 8-1/2 x 11) using stash that you already have. Many of the embellishments are hand-made (like the paper "ribbon" in my layout below) and the designs themselves are interesting and suitable for any theme depending on the papers you choose.

I worried like crazy about the workshop and making my kits was tough. How could I pick papers & embellishmets without seeing the layouts in advance? What if the layout didn't suit the theme of my kit? What if I hated all of the designs!

Well, it turned out my worries were unfounded. The workshop was very fast-paced (about 1 layout every 20-30 mins) and pretty well all of my kits worked out just fine. I won't mislead you - most of my layouts aren't quite finished yet - most are lacking titles and almost none contain pictures yet, but it was still a huge achievement in a single day. Now I just have to keep up the momentum to finish the layouts so that they can actually go into my albums.

Here is the first complete layout to share with you:

For this layout I used My Mind's Eye "Colorful Christmas" paper and chipboard embellishments. After getting it home I added some Glossy Accents to the snowmen snowmen and tree and this one was complete. My favourite part of this layout is the pleated orange polka dot paper ribbon strip with the giant brads.

Then & now

My husband's nephew is getting married in a couple of weeks and as a gift, his mother-in-law-to-be is putting together a scrapbook album for the couple. I created the following double-page layout documenting how Christopher has grown over the years. I chose pictures of him at various ages, with a picture of the couple as the main picture. My husband wrote a message where he talks about how proud he is of his nephew which I turned into a letter and used as my journalling.

The page layout is based on the current Stuck On U Sketches challenge. I kept very true to the sketch while adjusting it to a 2-page 8-1/2 x 11" layout. The page elements include:

Hogwart's Halloween

I've never claimed to be up-to-date on my scrapbooks so it will not come as too much of a shock that today I'm sharing a 2-page layout of photos from last Halloween.

My eldest son decided he wanted to be Harry Potter (we're reading the books to him at bedtime) so off we went to our local Value Village where we purchased a Gryffindor robe, glasses, wand and broomstick. My younger son ended up selecting a Slytherin robe for his costume but he insisted on having glasses just like his brother. The result was a very frustrated little boy because everyone kept commenting on the two cute Harry Potters. "I'm Draco Malfoy" he would insist. We finally determined an explanation for the glasses - he was Draco Malfoy but drank some polyjuice potion to turn into Harry Potter and he was only part way through the transformation.

Regardless of the costume confusion, both boys had a lot of fun running around casting "expelliarmus" and "riddikulus" spells at everything that moved.

 

I found some Harry Potter specific paper and embellishments for the layout - Creative Imaginations has an entire line of papers, stickers and die cuts to choose from! I also searched out a free Harry Potter font online and used it to make the title which I printed off on the paper prior to adding all the photos.

The final step was journalling but you really can't make it out well in the pictures. I used a fine black pen and wrote in many of the blank areas of the pages but the fineness of the ink makes the words blend into the background pattern ... not sure if I like that or not. Hmmm.

What's Cookin'

I've been doing quite a bit of scrapbooking lately and am actually catching up a bit on my pages. Today, I'm sharing a one-page layout that I created around a meeting I had with Chef Michael Smith (isn't he a cutie?) at a fund-raiser dinner.

I tend to think of chefs in terms of their crisp white jackets so I kept the page clean and simple with a fair amount of white space and a minimum of embellishments. I picked up the papers and embellishment packs ("What's Cookin" SRM stickers and Doodlebug Cute Cuts tags) on my way to a crop and created the page without having the photo with me. So imagine my surprise when I got home and discovered that the blue matched the cover of Chef Michael Smith's cookbook and the burgundy accents matched my sweater - totally coincidental!

To create the page, I started with an off-centre patterned paper that I tore along the top. I then added a strip of burgundy striped paper along the bottom and then used the same paper to matte the title onto. The words along the top (do they apply to the food or to the chef? hmmm?) are clear stickers. I grouped two tags from the embellishment pack, along with a sentiment sticker for the bottom corner.

My handsome son

It's that time of year when the first school portraits are taken. I had to scrapbook this picture right away because I am so in love with the picture.

I kept the layout very clean & simple to put all of the focus on my boy's grin. Can you see the mischief lurking not far at all beneath the surface?

I used plain red & mustard cardstock to matte the picture. I chose an "A" from Basic Grey and matted it on mustard card. I used my Copics to emphasize the orange, yellow and purples in the letter. The remaining letters are Thickers that I coloured to match as well.

Road trip to Calgary

Can't believe the summer is almost over, but at least we had a chance to go on a super vacation! This year we decided to stay somewhat local and do a good old-fashioned roadtrip through BC and into Alberta. The kids were remarkably good about all the driving but then we made sure to finish up each day with something fun:

• 1st stop was Kamloops with its wonderful Riverside Park (swimming in the river, absolutely huge spray-park and a death-defying playground).
• 2nd stop was Golden which was pretty dull but we had the hotel swimming pool & hot tub all to ourselves!
• 3rd stop was Drumheller (or Dinosaur Central as the locals think of it) where we camped, visited the world's best dinosaur museum (the Royal Tyrrell) and explored the local Hoodoos (more on that when I get the scrapbook pages done).
• 4th stop was Calgary, where we met my parents, my sister and her 2 girls for 2 days at the Calgary Zoo.
• The final stop was Edmonton where we enjoyed the farm life at my sister's place

Today's layout if for the Calgary Zoo portion of the trip. This zoo is just fantastic! I took way too many pictures (what a surprise!) but managed to cut it down to a 3-page scrapbook layout.

I'm pretty proud of these pages because I came up with the layout design myself and I also put a lot of work into the first page header. The layout is pretty simple, using kraft paper as the background, with an orange scalloped paper used to provide continuity on the pages. All of the matting is done with cream and kraft cardstock as well as a monkey-themed green patterned paper.

The title and the 2 animals were cut with my Cricut (Animal Kingdom cartridge). I then ran the title through the Cuttlebug using a Zebra embossing folder from Sizzix. The animals were pieced together and then I used a dark brown marker to add some details. The other titles (the ones in cream paper) were cut using SCAL software and the Cricut. I outlined the words with brown ink to make them stand out. The final touch was all the tropical foliage which was stamped, coloured, then hand-cut (ouch!!!). The stamp is from Stampadoodle and is a real favourite of mine.

Page 2 is simple with just the addition of some cut-out monkeys from the patterned paper. I like how they seem to be crawling all over the picture of Gramma & Grampa with all the unruly grand-kids. I used the same orange scalloped paper to provide continuity over all 3 pages.

Page 3 has all of the journalling on it, as well as a few hand-cut leaves tucked in to tie the pages together. The journalling was done on my computer using Comic Sans font.

I hope to have more layouts from the holiday soon, just need my hands to recover from all the fussy cutting!

Pre-school

UPDATE:   Well, I never got Alex to cooperate with telling me in his own words about pre-school so I finally gave up and finished off the page with just a list of the class, a close-up shot of Alex, and a header. The header is inspired by the current challenge at Club CK which was to create a banner. For the first section of the banner, I cut a square from the patterned paper ("S") and then cut triangles from some scrap. I didn't have any red alpha stickers so I used my Copic markers to colour white stickers.

ORIGINAL POST:   Alex "graduated" from pre-school last week. I have a hard time taking this seriously but he & his classmates certainly did look adorable in their best outfits & cardboard caps. Alex was just beaming with pride! After seeing the ceremony (and I use that word with much amusement) I felt motivated to scrapbook the class photo.

The journaling isn't complete as I want to add Alex's actual memories of pre-school and he isn't willing to cooperate yet. As well, I find myself unable to remember most of the kids' names (one of the down-sides of having his sitter drop him off). I will add the names and Alex's journalling to the lined paper at the bottom. The page itself was quite simple to make. I matted the photo in red and then matted half of it in cream (I cut away the cream on the bottom edges so that it wouldn't blend in with the cream lined paper). The embellishments are cut from some of the spare "Teacher's Pet" paper and then adhered with pop-dots. I'm going to do my best to get Alex to write some of his memories down himself so that I can have his actually handwriting on the page.

Pretty in Pink

Every year while I was growing up my grandmother and/or great-aunt would make my sister & I matching outfits for pictures. As a result, I have a stack of photos of my little sister and I in outfits ranging from adorable to quite hideous (and I leave it to you to decide which end of the spectrum these land in). I am slowly starting to scrapbook the pictures and I'm really trying to do them justice.

I was 6 (& my sister 2 or 3) in this picture but I still remember loving this poncho - I would play with the pom pom constantly.  This picture was quite a challenge to scrapbook though because the photo itself is quite damaged. Aside from the scratches and dust, there is also quite a bit of discolouration on my sister's face (she's the one with the weird green blotch across her eye). I cleaned up the picture as much as I could using Photoshop but I just couldn't get rid of the green until I converted the picture to black & white. Unfortunately, that also meant that the wonderful pink of these hand-made ponchos was lost. In the end I added the colour back to the ponchos while leaving the rest of the picture black & white. I'm quite pleased with the result.

I started this page with a raspberry Bazzil cardstock, then overlaid a white eyelet cut-out paper to mirror the crochet pattern of the ponchos. I then triple-matted the photo with subtle patterned paper. The sentiment was designed using SCAL and then cut on the Cricut. I added some gems to the "i" for a bit of shine. The flower was made from a disassembled cardstock flower (the first layer was the wrong colour so I replaced it with one I made using a spellbinders die). I also added gems to the cardstock sticker borders to add shine.

Generations

When my Dad came to visit over the winter he brought a folder of photos and notes from his genealogy research. I spent some time scanning photos and now need to get them scrapbooked. I just love old family photos - they can tell us so much about our history and where we came from.

This page has a photo of my great-grandmother and grandmother. The photo would be early 1920's. My grandma would have been 3 or 4 years old at the time - isn't she adorable? I find it amazing how similar my sister looked at the same age, although it might just be the pageboy haircut.

I wanted to draw the eye to Gramma so I added some colour to her sweater (using Photoshop). This is the first time I've tried this and I'm quite pleased with the result. To embellish the page, I made my own flower embellishments by fussy-cutting some of the flowers out of the patterned paper. There weren't enough flowers on the sheet so I scanned it, used Photoshop to isolate the flowers, adjusted their size and then printed them off. I added some fabric leaves from my stash and then layered everything onto the page using pop-dots. I finished off with a few green pearls to add a bit of bling (everything needs bling) and then a raised journaling square.
